The Dust Of Uruzgan

[00:00:00] The Dust Of Uruzgan - Lee Kernaghan/Fred Smith

[00:00:03] Written by:Fred Smith

[00:00:08] In the ring they call me Warlord my mother calls me Paul

[00:00:12] You can call me Private Warren when you're filing your report

[00:00:17] As to how I came to be here this is what I understand

[00:00:20] In this hospital in Germany from the dust of Uruzgan

[00:00:35] You'd just turned twenty eight just bought a new car

[00:00:39] When you joined the first battalion of the big 1 RAR

[00:00:43] We were next up for deployment I south afghanistan

[00:00:47] To combat the insurgence in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:00:53] It took seven months of training just to get into the joint

[00:00:57] There were push ups and procedures

[00:00:59] And there was death by powerpoint

[00:01:01] Then the RSOI course in Ali Al Salaam

[00:01:05] But nothing can prepare you for the dust of Uruzgan

[00:01:09] Me and Benny sat together flying into Kandshar

[00:01:12] We sucked back on our near beers in the camp baker bar

[00:01:17] We were up at 05:30 we were on the Herc and out

[00:01:20] In twenty flying minutes we were in to tarin kowt

[00:01:24] We shook hands as the boys ripped out from MRTF one

[00:01:28] And pretty soon were out patrolling in the Afghan summer sun

[00:01:32] Walking through the green zones with a styer in my hand

[00:01:36] Body armour chafing through the dust of Uruzgan

[00:01:50] Well we started up near chora working fourteen hours a day

[00:01:54] Mentoring a kandak from the afghan fourth brigade

[00:01:58] Down through the baluchi into eastern dorafshan

[00:02:02] Working under open skies in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:02:06] It's a long long way from

[00:02:07] Townsville not like any place you've seen

[00:02:10] Suddenly you're walking through from the fourteenth century

[00:02:14] Women under burkhas tribal warlords rule a land

[00:02:18] Full of goats and huts and jungle trucks in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:02:21] And the education minister can neither read nor write

[00:02:25] And the minister for women runs a knock shop there at night

[00:02:29] They've been fighting there forever over water

[00:02:32] Food and land

[00:02:33] Murdering each other in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:02:40] There's nothing about this province

[00:02:41] That's remotely fair or just

[00:02:44] But worse than the corruption is the endless bloody dust

[00:02:48] It's as fine as talcum powder on the ground and in the air

[00:02:51] And it gets into your eyes and it gets into your hair

[00:02:55] And it gets in to your weapon and it gets in to your boots

[00:02:59] When bureaucrats all show up here it gets in to their suits

[00:03:03] And it gets in the machinery and it foils every plan

[00:03:07] There's something quite symbolic bout the dust of Uruzgan

[00:03:14] Still the people can be gracious and their courteous and smart

[00:03:17] And when the children look into your eyes they walk into your heart

[00:03:21] Face each day with courage and each year without a plan

[00:03:25] Beyond scratching for survival in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:03:32] But the taliban are restless keep the people terrorized

[00:03:36] With roadside bombs and hangings and leaving letters in the night

[00:03:39] And they have no useful vision for the children of this land

[00:03:44] But to keep them praying on their knees in the dust of Uruzgan

[00:04:10] It was a quite Saturday morning when the two shop made a call

[00:04:13] On a compound of interest to the east of COP Mashal

[00:04:17] We had some information they were building IED's

[00:04:21] So we condoned and we searched it in accord with SOP's

[00:04:25] I was on the west flank picket propped there with ben

[00:04:29] There to keep a watchful eye out while the other blokes went in

[00:04:33] We knew the signs of danger from the TTP's we'd learned

[00:04:37] But the nationals were moving back and forth without concern

[00:04:41] We'd been static there for hours when I shifted slightly back

[00:04:44] My foot tripped a AP mine and everything went black

[00:04:49] I woke up on a gurney flat out on my back

[00:04:52] Had to ask them seven times just to get the facts

[00:04:56] That I lived to tell the story through a simple twist of fate

[00:05:00] The main change lay ten foot away from the pressure plate

[00:05:04] You see the mine was linked

[00:05:05] By det cord to a bid charge laid by hand

[00:05:08] Hidden under benny by the dust of Uruzgan

[00:05:14] I was a queensland champ Thai Boxer now I look south on my knee

[00:05:18] And all I see is bed sheets where my foot use to be

[00:05:23] Benny's dead and buried underneath Australian sand

[00:05:26] But his spirit's out there wandering

[00:05:28] Through the dust the dust of Uruzgan

[00:06:10] Now I'm going back to Townsville it's the city of my birth

[00:06:13] Well some go back to ballarat and some go back to perth

[00:06:17] I'll be living with my mother who's still trying to understand

[00:06:21] Why we're spending blood and treasure in the dust in the dust of Uruzgan
