There Is an Inn, a Merry Old Inn…

[00:00:03] beneath an old grey hill,

[00:00:08] and there they brew a beer so brown

[00:00:12] that the man in the moon himself came down

[00:00:17] one night to drink his fill.

[00:00:22] the ostler has a tipsy cat

[00:00:25] that plays a five-stringed fiddle;

[00:00:27] and up and down he runs his bow,

[00:00:29] now squeaking high, now purring low,

[00:00:31] now sawing in the middle.

[00:00:37] the landlord keeps a little dog

[00:00:39] that is mighty fond of jokes;

[00:00:41] when there's good cheer among the guests,

[00:00:43] he cocks an ear at all the jests

[00:00:45] and laughs until he chokes.

[00:00:51] they also keep a horning cow

[00:00:53] as proud as any queen;

[00:00:56] but music turns her head like ale,

[00:00:58] and makes her wave her tufted tail

[00:01:01] and dance upon the green.

[00:01:18] and o! the rows of silver dishes

[00:01:20] and the store of silver spoons!

[00:01:22] for sunday there's a special pair,

[00:01:24] and these they polish up with care

[00:01:27] on saturday afternoons.

[00:01:33] the man in the moon was drinking deep,

[00:01:35] and the cat began to wail;

[00:01:37] a dish and a spoon on the table danced,

[00:01:39] the cow in the garden madly pranced,

[00:01:41] and the little dog chased his tail.

[00:01:47] the man in the moon took another mug,

[00:01:51] and rolled beneath his chair;

[00:01:56] and there he dozed and dreamed of ale,

[00:02:00] till in the sky the stars were pale,

[00:02:05] and dawn was in the air.

[00:02:11] then the ostler said to his tipsy cat:

[00:02:13] "the white horses of the moon,

[00:02:15] they neigh and champ their silver bits;

[00:02:17] but their master's been and drowned his wits,

[00:02:19] and the sun'll be rising soon!"

[00:02:25] so the cat on his fiddle played hey-diddle-diddle,

[00:02:27] a jig that would wake the dead:

[00:02:29] he squeaked and sawed and quickened the tune,

[00:02:31] while the landlord shook the man in the moon:

[00:02:34] "it's after three!" he said.

[00:03:04] they rolled the man slowly up the hill

[00:03:06] and bundled him into the moon,

[00:03:08] while his horses galloped up in rear,

[00:03:10] and the cow came capering like a deer,

[00:03:13] and a dish ran up with the spoon.

[00:03:18] now quicker the fiddle went deedle-dum-diddle;

[00:03:20] the dog began to roar,

[00:03:22] the cow and the horses stood on their heads;

[00:03:24] the guests all bounded from their beds

[00:03:26] and danced upon the floor.

[00:03:32] with a ping and a pang the fiddle-strings broke!

[00:03:34] the cow jumped over the moon,

[00:03:36] and the little dog laughed to see such fun,

[00:03:38] and the saturday dish went off at a run

[00:03:41] with the silver sunday spoon.

[00:03:57] the round moon rolled behind the hill,

[00:04:01] as the sun raised up her head.

[00:04:05] she hardly believed her fiery eyes;

[00:04:10] for though it was day, to her suprise

[00:04:14] they all went back to bed.
