[00:00:00] Leon McDuff - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

[00:00:00] Ladies and gentlemen of the jury

[00:00:03] I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff

[00:00:08] Ladies and gentlemen on the jury

[00:00:11] I asking you to be the judge of when enough is enough

[00:00:19] Now Leon McDuff has worked on his daddy's farm

[00:00:23] Everyday since the day that he was born

[00:00:26] Plowing in the fields and hoeing in the garden

[00:00:30] And helping pick the cotton and the corn

[00:00:34] Then came the time of the Mississippi floods

[00:00:37] And all of his work went down the drain

[00:00:40] The land was parched by the sun and blown

[00:00:43] By the wind and finally washed away by the rain

[00:00:47] So he went to his friends to get some help from them

[00:00:51] But their crops and their money was all gone

[00:00:54] So he went to the bank to mortgage his home

[00:00:58] But the bank wouldn't give Leon a loan

[00:01:02] He could not decide how his family would survive

[00:01:05] With no crops and no money to buy food

[00:01:09] And as he struggled with his hands to rework his land

[00:01:12] The notice came that said his land tax was due

[00:01:16] Ladies and gentlemen of the jury

[00:01:19] I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff

[00:01:28] Now in an air-conditioned office on the other side of town

[00:01:31] Sat a government official with a frown

[00:01:35] 'Cause he'd been trying for so long to find land to build

[00:01:38] A summer home but cheap river land could not be found

[00:01:42] Then in the middle of his gloom his boss walked

[00:01:45] In the room and said I've got some real good news

[00:01:47] For the house you've planned

[00:01:49] There's a farmer who's so poor and who's luck has run

[00:01:52] So sour that he can not pay the taxes on his land

[00:01:56] So just you wait a week or two 'til the money's over due

[00:02:00] Then go to the cashier down the hall

[00:02:04] With his deed in your hand pay the taxes on the land

[00:02:07] Have the sheriff give Leon McDuff a call

[00:02:11] Have him tell Leon to move by the last day of July

[00:02:15] Because the taxes on his land are overdue

[00:02:18] Tell him he has to move away

[00:02:20] 'Cause the taxes were not paid

[00:02:22] Then all his river land belongs to you

[00:02:29] Now in that air-conditioned office in about a week

[00:02:31] Or two came the sheriff saying I've got some bad news

[00:02:36] That Leon McDuff says he's had some bad luck

[00:02:39] And he'll try to get the money but he ain't agonna' move

[00:02:43] That official he jumped up and grabbed

[00:02:46] The sheriff by the arm he said

[00:02:47] We're going down to take that land today

[00:02:51] So he and the sheriff drove down to Leon's farm

[00:02:55] To tell the McDuffs to move away

[00:02:58] There stood Leon on his land with a shotgun in his hand

[00:03:01] His eyes narrowed 'neath the brim of his hat

[00:03:05] He said "I've worked hard on this land as a boy

[00:03:08] And as a man I ain't gonna lose it

[00:03:10] To no god damned bureaucrat "

[00:03:12] Well that bureaucrat got mad and grabbed

[00:03:15] The gun in Leon's hand and in the struggle

[00:03:17] An explosion cracked the air

[00:03:20] And when the smoke and dust had cleared

[00:03:22] And the ringing left their ears the sheriff lay

[00:03:25] A dying on the ground

[00:03:27] The sheriff lay a dying on the ground

[00:03:45] Now on this table I will lay this gun "Exhibit A"

[00:03:49] With two sets of fingerprints as you can see

[00:03:53] But other hands were here unperceived by eye

[00:03:56] Or ear that helped trigger off this awful tragedy

[00:04:00] Now to me its still unclear just

[00:04:02] What really caused the problem here

[00:04:04] There's much too much we've got to know

[00:04:06] Before we know enough

[00:04:07] So we can't find out today where all the guilt

[00:04:10] Should lay but it shouldn't be on Leon McDuff

[00:04:15] Ladies and gentlemen of the jury

[00:04:18] I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff

[00:04:23] Ladies and gentlemen on the jury

[00:04:27] I asking you to be the judge of when enough is enough

[00:04:36] It's just by enough
