And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda(Live)

[00:00:00] And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (Live) - John Williamson

[00:00:00] Written by:Eric Bogle

[00:00:34] When I was a young man I carried a pack

[00:00:38] I lived the free life of a rover

[00:00:42] From the murray's green basin till the dusty outback

[00:00:46] I waltzed my matilda right over

[00:00:51] Then in nineteen fifteen the country said son

[00:00:55] There's no time for roamin' there's work to be done

[00:00:59] And they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun

[00:01:05] And they sent me away to the war

[00:01:09] And the band played waltzing matilda

[00:01:14] As the ship pulled away from the quay

[00:01:18] And amidst all the cheers the flag waving and tears

[00:01:24] We set off for gallipoli

[00:01:31] How well I remember that terrible day

[00:01:35] When our blood stained the sand and the water

[00:01:39] And how in that hell that they called suvla bay

[00:01:44] We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter

[00:01:48] Johnny turkey was waiting he primed himself well

[00:01:53] Showered us with bullets and he rained us with shells

[00:01:57] And in five minutes flat well he blew us to hell

[00:02:03] He nearly blew us right back to australia

[00:02:07] And the band played waltzing matilda

[00:02:12] As we stopped to bury our slain

[00:02:17] We buried ours and the turks buried theirs

[00:02:22] Then we started all over again

[00:02:28] So those who were left just tried to survive

[00:02:33] In a mad world of blood and fire

[00:02:37] And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive

[00:02:41] As the corpses around me piled higher

[00:02:46] Then a big turkish shell knocked me arse over head

[00:02:51] And when I awoke in the hospital bed

[00:02:55] I saw what it had done and I wished I was dead

[00:03:00] Then I knew there were worse things than dying

[00:03:05] And I'll go no more waltzing matilda

[00:03:09] All through the green bush far and free

[00:03:14] Coz to hunt and tent peg

[00:03:16] A man needs both legs

[00:03:19] No more waltzing matilda for me

[00:03:26] They collected the crippled the wounded the maimed

[00:03:31] Shipped us all back to australia

[00:03:35] The legless the armless the blind and insane

[00:03:40] The brave wounded heroes of suvla bay

[00:03:44] And as our ship pulled into circular quay

[00:03:49] I looked at the place where my legs used to be

[00:03:53] And I thanked christ there was nobody waiting for me

[00:03:59] To mourn and to grieve and to pity

[00:04:03] And the band played waltzing matilda

[00:04:08] As they carried us down the gangway

[00:04:12] Nobody cheered they just stood and stared

[00:04:18] Then turned all their faces away

[00:04:25] And now every april I sit on the porch

[00:04:29] As I watch the parade pass before me

[00:04:33] I see my old comerades how proudly they march

[00:04:38] Reviving old dreams and past glories

[00:04:42] But the old men march slowly bones stiff and sore

[00:04:47] Tired old men from a tired old war

[00:04:52] And the young people ask 'what are they marching for'

[00:04:57] And I ask myself the same question

[00:05:02] And the band played waltzing matilda

[00:05:06] As the old men still answer the call

[00:05:11] Year after year more old men disappear

[00:05:16] Soon none of them will march there at all
