The Great Dust Storm

[00:00:00] The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie

[00:00:03] On the 14th day of April of 1935

[00:00:10] There struck the worst of

[00:00:12] Dust storms that ever filled the sky

[00:00:17] You could see that dust storm comin'

[00:00:20] The cloud looked deathlike black

[00:00:23] And through our mighty nation

[00:00:27] It left a dreadful track

[00:00:31] From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line

[00:00:37] Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande

[00:00:44] It fell across our city like a

[00:00:48] Curtain of black rolled down

[00:00:51] We thought it was our judgement

[00:00:54] We thought it was our doom

[00:00:57] The radio reported we listened with alarm

[00:01:04] The wild and windy actions of

[00:01:08] This great mysterious storm;

[00:01:11] From Albuquerque and Clovis

[00:01:14] And all New Mexico

[00:01:18] They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw

[00:01:24] From old Dodge City Kansas

[00:01:28] The dust had rung their knell

[00:01:31] And a few more comrades

[00:01:34] Sleeping on top of old Boot Hill

[00:01:38] From Denver Colorado

[00:01:41] They said it blew so strong

[00:01:45] They thought that they could hold out

[00:01:48] But they didn't know how long

[00:01:52] Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks

[00:01:58] And the children they was cryin'

[00:02:02] As it whistled through the cracks

[00:02:05] And the family it was crowded into their little room

[00:02:12] They thought the world had ended

[00:02:15] And they thought it was their doom

[00:02:19] The storm took place at sundown

[00:02:22] It lasted through the night

[00:02:25] When we looked out next morning

[00:02:29] We saw a terrible sight

[00:02:32] We saw outside our window

[00:02:36] Where wheat fields they had grown

[00:02:40] Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown

[00:02:47] It covered up our fences

[00:02:50] It covered up our barns

[00:02:53] It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm

[00:03:00] We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in

[00:03:07] We rattled down that highway to never come back again
