A Week In A Country Jail

[00:00:00] A Week In A Country Jail - Tom T.Hall

[00:00:13] One time I spent a week inside a little country jail

[00:00:17] And I don't guess I'll ever live it down

[00:00:21] I was sittin' at a red light when these two men came and got me

[00:00:25] And said that I was speeding through their town

[00:00:30] Well, they said,"Tomorrow morning you can see the judge then go"

[00:00:34] They let me call one person on the phone

[00:00:38] I thought I'd be there overnight so I just called my boss

[00:00:43] To tell him I'd be off but not for long

[00:00:47] Well, they motioned me inside a cell with seven other guys

[00:00:51] One little barred up window in the rear

[00:00:55] My cellmates said if they had let me bring some money in

[00:01:00] We ought to send the jailer for some beer

[00:01:04] Well, I had to pay him double 'cause he was the man in charge

[00:01:08] And the jailer's job was not the best in town

[00:01:13] Later on his wife brought hot bologna, eggs and gravy

[00:01:17] The first day I was there I turned it down

[00:01:21] Well, next morning they just let us sleep but I was up real early

[00:01:25] Wonderin' when I'd get my release

[00:01:30] Later on we got more hot bologna, eggs and gravy

[00:01:34] And by now I wasn't quite so hard to please

[00:01:38] Two days later when I thought that I had been forgotten

[00:01:42] The sheriff came in chewin' on a straw

[00:01:46] He said, "Where is the guy who thinks that this is Indianapolis?

[00:01:50] I'd like to talk to him about the law"

[00:01:55] Well, I told him who I was and told him I was working steady

[00:01:59] And I really should be gettin' on my way

[00:02:03] That part about me bein' who I was did not impress him

[00:02:08] He said, "The judge'll be here any day"

[00:02:12] The jailer had a wife and let me tell you she was awful

[00:02:16] But she brought that hot bologna every day

[00:02:20] And after seven days she got to lookin' so much better

[00:02:25] I asked her if she'd like to run away

[00:02:29] The next mornin' that old judge took every nickel that I had

[00:02:33] And he said, "Son, let this teach you not to race"

[00:02:38] The jailer's wife was smilin' from the window as I left

[00:02:42] In thirty minutes I was out of state
