1913 Massacre

[00:00:00] 1913 Massacre - Woody Guthrie

[00:00:00] Written by:Trad;ArrGuthrie

[00:00:05] Take a trip with me in 1913

[00:00:10] To Calumet Michigan in the copper country

[00:00:14] I'll take you to a place called Italian Hall

[00:00:20] When the miners are having their big Christmas ball

[00:00:28] I will take you in a door and up a high stairs

[00:00:32] Singing and dancing is heard everywhere

[00:00:37] I will let you shake hands with the people you see

[00:00:43] And watch the kids dance around the big Christmas tree

[00:00:51] You ask about work and you ask about pay

[00:00:56] They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day

[00:01:01] Working the copper claims risking their lives

[00:01:05] So it's fun to spend christmas with children and wives

[00:01:13] There's talking and laughing and songs in the air

[00:01:17] And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere

[00:01:22] Before you know it you're friends with us all

[00:01:26] And you're dancing around and around in the hall

[00:01:34] Well a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights

[00:01:37] To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet

[00:01:41] To hear all this fun you would not realize

[00:01:45] That the copper boss thug men are milling outside

[00:01:52] The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door

[00:01:56] One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire

[00:02:00] A lady she hollered there's no such a thing

[00:02:04] Keep on with your party there's no such thing

[00:02:10] A few people rushed and it was only a few

[00:02:13] It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you

[00:02:18] A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down

[00:02:22] But the thugs held the door and he could not get out

[00:02:29] And then others followed a hundred or more

[00:02:32] But most everybody remained on the floor

[00:02:36] The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke

[00:02:40] While the children were smothered on the stairs by the door

[00:02:46] Such a terrible sight I never did see

[00:02:50] We carried our children back up to their tree

[00:02:55] The scabs outside still laughed at their spree

[00:03:01] And the children that died there were seventy-three

[00:03:08] The piano played a slow funeral tune

[00:03:12] And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon

[00:03:17] The parents they cried and the miners they moaned

[00:03:24] See what your greed for money has done
