Poem in October

[00:00:00] Poem in October - Dylan Thomas

[00:00:01] It was my thirtieth year to heaven

[00:00:04] Woke to my hearing from harbour

[00:00:06] And neighbour wood

[00:00:07] And the mussel pooled and the heron

[00:00:10] Priested shore

[00:00:11] The morning beckon

[00:00:12] With water praying and

[00:00:14] Call of seagull and rook

[00:00:17] And the knock of sailing boats

[00:00:19] On the net webbed wall

[00:00:20] Myself to set foot

[00:00:22] That second

[00:00:23] In the still sleeping town and set forth

[00:00:29] My birthday began with the water

[00:00:31] Birds and the birds of the

[00:00:33] Winged trees flying my name

[00:00:35] Above the farms and the white horses

[00:00:38] And I rose

[00:00:39] In rainy autumn

[00:00:40] And walked abroad in a shower of all my days

[00:00:45] High tide and the heron dived

[00:00:47] When I took the road

[00:00:49] Over the border

[00:00:49] And the gates

[00:00:50] Of the town closed as the town awoke

[00:00:55] A springful of larks in a rolling

[00:00:57] Cloud and the roadside bushe

[00:00:59] S brimming with whistling

[00:01:01] Blackbirds and the sun of October

[00:01:03] Summery

[00:01:04] On the hill's shoulder

[00:01:06] Here were fond climates

[00:01:08] And sweet singers suddenly

[00:01:11] Come in the morning

[00:01:12] Where I wandered and listened

[00:01:14] To the rain wringing

[00:01:16] Wind blow cold

[00:01:18] In the wood faraway under me

[00:01:22] Pale rain over the dwindling harbour

[00:01:24] And over the sea wet

[00:01:26] Church the size of a snail

[00:01:28] With its horns through mist and the castle

[00:01:31] Brown as owls

[00:01:33] But all the gardens

[00:01:35] Of spring and summer

[00:01:37] Were blooming in the tall tales

[00:01:39] Beyond the border

[00:01:41] And under the lark full cloud

[00:01:44] There could I marvel

[00:01:46] My birthday

[00:01:47] Away but the weather turned around

[00:01:52] It turned away from the blithe country

[00:01:55] And down the other air

[00:01:56] And the blue altered sky

[00:01:58] Streamed again a wonder of summer

[00:02:01] With apples

[00:02:03] Pears and red currants

[00:02:05] And I saw in the turning so clearly a child's

[00:02:08] Forgotten mornings

[00:02:09] When he walked with his mother

[00:02:11] Through the parables

[00:02:13] Of sun light

[00:02:14] And the legends of the green chapels

[00:02:17] And the twice told fields of infancy

[00:02:21] That his tears burned my cheeks

[00:02:24] And his heart moved in mine

[00:02:28] These were the woods the river and sea

[00:02:30] Where a boy

[00:02:31] In the listening

[00:02:32] Summertime of the dead

[00:02:34] Whispered the truth of his joy

[00:02:36] To the trees and the stones

[00:02:38] And the fish in the tide

[00:02:40] And the mystery

[00:02:41] Sang alive

[00:02:42] Still in the water and singingbirds

[00:02:48] And there could I marvel my birthday

[00:02:50] Away but the weather turned around

[00:02:54] And the true

[00:02:55] Joy of the long dead child sang burning

[00:03:00] In the sun

[00:03:02] It was my thirtieth

[00:03:04] Year to heaven stood there

[00:03:06] Then in the summer noon

[00:03:07] Though the town below lay leaved

[00:03:10] With October blood

[00:03:12] O may my heart's truth

[00:03:14] Still be sung

[00:03:17] On this high hill in a year's turning
